2008 Ford Racing Cobra Jet Mustang

Months after Dodge unveiled their Challenger Drag Race Package, the folks at Ford Racing decided to respond by prepping a pony car for the strip.  The result is this - the 2008 Ford Racing Cobra Jet Mustang.

Although it's a new offering from Ford, the Cobra Jet Mustang is nothing new.  In the pursuit of speed, fifty Mustangs were built in 1968 with massive engines (all 428-cubic-inch V-8s) and with virtually all creature comforts removed.

The motor may have changed, but the premise behind the 2008 Cobra Jet Mustang is the same.  Starting with a 5.4-liter "Cobra Jet" V-8, the Cobra Jet Mustang (aka the FR500CJ) adds a cold-air induction system, 9-inch rear axle, one-piece driveshaft with safety loop, special rear control arms, adjustable dampers, and a unique Lexan rear window.  At the same time, Ford Racing strips out the "non-essentials," including the air conditioning, stereo, and - since this won't be a street car - the VIN number itself.

According to Ford, this turn-key package allows customers to lay down quarter-mile times in the ten second range.
