By now our spy photographers have shown us prototypes of the 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck several times, but this latest batch of photos shows all three cab styles, as well as different bed lengths, for the new truck.
All versions of the 2015 Ford F-150 continue the blocky, squared-off styling that is familiar from the other prototypes we have spied. What’s new is that we can now see the differences between the shapes of two-door Regular Cab, two-and-a-half-door SuperCab, and four-door SuperCrew models. Notably, the beltline on SuperCab and SuperCrew trucks appears to kink upward on the rear door, a common styling trend that can create a more dramatic greenhouse shape. Also visible is an extremely low plastic air dam below the front bumper, likely one of many aerodynamic aids to reduce the truck’s drag coefficient and boost its fuel-economy ratings.
Also evident from these spy photos is the fact that the 2015 Ford F-150 will be offered with different bed lengths. That’s no great surprise, given the current truck is available with either a 6.5- or 8.0-foot long bed, allowing customers to pick the exact type of F-150 they need.
As for what’s beneath the camouflage tape and sheetmetal, we still have few answers. The 2015 Ford F-150 is widely expected to follow the design cues of the Ford Atlas concept shown at the Detroit auto show. Expect curb weight to drop as much as 700 pounds, thanks in part to the adoption of lightweight metals like aluminum. Ford will also endeavor to hone the pickup’s edges so it creates as little aerodynamic drag as possible. As for powertrains, we can likely expect a smaller version of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, along with updated versions of the 5.0- and 6.2-liter V-8 mills, and 3.7-liter V-6, from the current Ford F-150. There are also reports Ford will introduce a hybrid powertrain to further boost fuel economy, but that seems less likely at this point. A ten-speed automatic transmission, co-developed with General Motors, is a much stronger possibility.
The 2015 Ford F-150 is expected to go on sale next year and could debut at a major auto show early in 2014.
