The 2014 Jeep Cherokee will return as much as 22/31 mpg (city/highway) when it goes on sale later this month. That figure, as reported by the EPA, is for models equipped with the base 184-hp, 2.4-liter inline-four engine and front-wheel drive. All versions of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee use a nine-speed automatic transmission.
Stepping up to all-wheel-drive with the 2.4-liter engine drops the 2014 Jeep Cherokee fuel economy ratings to 21/28 mpg. Choosing the 271-hp, 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine results in efficiency ratings of 19/28 mpg with front-wheel drive, and 19/27 mpg with all-wheel drive.
Those numbers represent a significant drop in consumption compared to the outgoing 2012 Jeep Liberty, which averaged 16/22 mpg with rear-wheel drive and just 15/21 mpg with four-wheel drive. It’s also our first taste of the efficiency benefits on offer from the new 3.2-liter version of Chrysler’s Pentastar V-6; until the Cherokee, the mill had been offered only in a 3.6-liter displacement.
Compared to other compact crossovers, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee’s fuel economy is quite close to the segment average. As the table below shows, the 2.4-liter Cherokee’s highway fuel economy figures of 31 and 28 mpg match up with most rivals and even beat some older cars, including the Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Rogue, and Volkswagen Tiguan.
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee debuted at the 2013 New York auto show as a replacement for the dated Liberty SUV. Its crossover chassis is based on the same Compact U.S. Wide platform used for the Dodge Dart sedan, and is thus loosely related to the chassis of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Although the launch of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee was pushed back slightly due to a transmission problem, officials say the crossover will still be in showrooms this month. Pricing starts at $23,990, including destination charges.
