The 2014 Chevrolet Volt may soon see significant powertrain changes. Inside EVs reports that the Volt’s 1.4-liter four-banger will be dropped next year in favor of the Buick Verano Turbo’s 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4. GM’s got many engines in its stable, though – is the turbo-four also found in the Verano Turbo the right choice?
GM’s got plenty of suitable powerplants for the Cruze-based Volt. As we see it, there are three engines that make the most sense as a generator for the Volt: the Verano Turbo’s 2.0-liter turbo I-4; the Chevy Cruze’s 1.4-liter turbo I-4, or the 2013 Cruze’s 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4.
Though the 2.0-liter turbo I-4 is capable of over 250 hp, we think a detuned unit would not only provide a major boost over the Volt’s current 1.4-liter I-4, but also be better suited to the upcoming Cadillac ELR, which can sacrifice a little efficiency for added performance.
Perhaps a better option would be a turbocharged version of the engine the Volt already has. The Cruze’s 138-hp 1.4-liter turbocharged I-4. This efficient engine would be an easy retrofit under the hood and provide a boost in power up to 138 hp.
The third option is the riskiest, yet many enthusiasts find it the most appealing: the 2013 Cruze’s 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4. Even though diesel sales are rising in the United States, many buyers remain wary of oil burners. A low-revving 2.0-liter turbodiesel would be an efficient way to charge the Volt and likely have a positive impact on fuel economy when not operating on electricity.
