The 2014 BMW X5 will carry a base sticker price of $53,725, including a $925 destination charge, when it arrives in showrooms later this year. That’s a hefty increase compared to the outgoing BMW X5, which started at $48,425.
The price increase is due in part to the fact that the 2014 BMW X5 was considerably revamped. Out front, look for new 5 Series-like headlights, a revised lower fascia, and active grille shutters hidden inside the kidney grilles. New taillights, revised rear fender shaping, and tweaked D-pillars round out the cosmetic changes. On the inside, previously optional toys like Bluetooth and navigation become standard, and buyers now pick from one of three trim lines: the butch xLine, the upscale Luxury Line, or the racy M Sport line.
The aforementioned base price is for the 2014 BMW X5 sDrive35i, which is the first ever rear-wheel-drive version of the crossover. It is powered by BMW’s familiar 300-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and eight-speed automatic transmission. Stepping up to the cheapest all-wheel-drive model, the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i, costs $56,025.
Next up the pricing hierarchy is the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d, which uses a new 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six engine good for 255 hp and 414 lb-ft of torque. It costs $57,525 but doesn’t start production until December. Atop that sits the $69,125 X5 xDrive50i, which has a tweaked twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. The engine now makes 445 hp and 480 lb-ft, gains of 45 hp and 30 lb-ft, respectively, compared to the old X5.
With its new entry price, the 2014 BMW X5 is more expensive than the entry all-wheel-drive versions of its key rivals. The X5 costs more than the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, Infiniti FX37, Mercedes-Benz ML350, and Porsche Cayenne V-6 — although the new Land Rover Range Rover Sport, which has similar power to the X5 xDrive35i, is much more expensive than the BMW.
