Diesels often catch a bad rap here in the U.S., and BMW wants to fight that perception – especially considering the variety of diesels working their way into the lineup. For the new 2014 BMW 535d, BMW has launched a new ad campaign to show that diesels can in fact be sexy.
BMW’s first ad shows off the 2014 535d’s performance credentials, courtesy of its 3.0-liter turbodiesel I-6′s 255 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque and eight-speed automatic transmission. The first ad shows off the 535d’s excess of torque, by having it line up against a new Porsche 911 Carrera at a red light. The result is the BMW 535d getting the jump on the 911 at the light – something that shouldn’t be all that shocking considering the 911 Carrera makes 325 lb-ft of torque at most, in S form.
The second group of videos are more realistic. Both show the 2014 BMW 535d from its side doing a burnout. In the first ad, the narrator touts the “optional” diesel smoke, while the second spot, discusses the 535d’s 38 mpg EPA highway rating, which is achievable as long as you’re not doing burnouts.
The 2014 BMW 535d will join the Audi A6 TDI and 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 Bluetec as U.S.-market diesel offerings for the midsize luxury sedan segment. The 2014 E250 has yet to be EPA rated, but the all-wheel-drive 2014 A6 TDI gets 24/38 mpg to the 2014 535d’s 26/38 mpg in rear-drive form and 26/37 mpg with all-wheel drive.
