Our colleagues at Motor Trend have awarded their SUV Of The Year Award to the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. That marks the second time the GL-Class has won the award; the prior generation also was voted Motor Trend SUV Of The Year in 2007.
The new 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class was introduced at the New York auto show earlier this past spring. It’s offered here in three different versions: the 240-hp GL350 BlueTec diesel, the 362-hp GL450, and the 429-hp GL550. Also on the way is a high-performance GL63 AMG variant, which packs 550 hp and a 4.9-second 0-to-60-mph time. Pricing starts at $63,305 for the GL350, $64,805 for the GL450, and $87,805 for the GL550. (Prices listed all include destination charges.)
To determine the winner, Motor Trend editors drove 11 different SUVs back-to-back over a test loop that included 35 miles of on-road driving, and another five miles of off-roading. The vehicles were judged on six key criteria: advancement in design, engineering excellence, efficiency, safety, value, and performance of intended function.
“The Mercedes-Benz GL truly outshone the field and emerged as the clear winner by the end of our program,” Motor Trend editor-in-chief Ed Loh said in a statement. “Simply put, the Mercedes-Benz GL is an outstanding vehicle, and we’re proud to name it our 2013 Sport/Utility of the Year.”
The editors lauded the GL’s long list of technology, opulent interior, smooth ride, capable off-road performance, and variety of efficient but powerful engines. “The new, second-generation GL is the best new SUV on the market period,” wrote Motor Trend senior features editor Jonny Lieberman.
“There is nothing more you could want or need in an SUV,” concurred road test editor Scott Mortara.
