Ford has continued to trickle out information on its 2013 Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid electric sedan. Now, we know just how far the PHEV’s efficiency will take you: drivers will be able to travel 21 miles on electric-only power and make it a diesel-like 620 miles on a full charge and full tank of gas.
We already had the official EPA numbers for the Fusion Energi – the sedan has been rated at 100 MPGe combined, which placed the Ford ahead of both the Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius Plug-In competition but below the 115-MPGe Honda Accord Plug-In. At 21 miles of battery-driven power, the Fusion Energi edges out all of its rivals save the Volt. (The Volt is rated for 38 miles of electric power.)
However, the Fusion – and its C-Max Energi mechanical twin – has been rated for 620 miles of range for a full battery and tank of gas. That number is a full 46 miles further than the now-second-best Accord, which is rated for 574 miles. The Fusion is the most powerful of the plug-ins, making 195 hp to the Volt’s 150 and the Pruis’ 134; Honda has yet to release output figures for the Accord PHEV.
The Fusion Energi also presents good value when stacked against the competition: it’s cheaper than both the Chevrolet and the Honda; the Ford may be $6735 more expensive than the $32,760-with-destination Toyota, but, remember, it’s good for almost twice the EV range. Buyers can expect to see the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi in dealerships in late winter to early spring of this year.
