VW CEO for the U.S. Stephan Jacoby has told Automotive News that the next-generation Beetle will have a bigger back seat and better packaging. The new Beetle is sure to appeal to a wider audience with more back seat legroom.
The rear seat in its current state is best suited for very small children. That’s to be expected in most two-door vehicles with rear seating. Nevertheless, the cramped rear seat is one of the most-complained-about aspects of the Beetle.
The next generation Beetle “will be a big step,” said head of design Walter de’ Silva. Since its re-launch in 1998, the new Beetle has not changed much in interior or exterior design or layout. Jacoby had this to say about VW’s retro coupe: “There is a great opportunity with the Beetle and the emotional fabric it has to offer.” An updated Beetle has been a long time coming and will hopefully prove to be a successful venture for VW.
The German automaker sold 83,434 examples of the Beetle in the U.S. in 1999. Sales peaked that year and have been on a steady decline since. Only 11,646 units have been sold in the U.S. since January.
