Volvo S60: A nice dowry
A new Volvo sedan for a new owner of Volvo Motor Car Corporation.
The all-new, 2011 Volvo S60 sedan is noteworthy not only because it’s the first new iteration in a decade of the most popular Volvo model but also because it arrives at a unique moment in Volvo’s history and indeed in the history of the western automotive industry: Volvo is in the midst of being transferred from its longtime owner, the Ford Motor Company, to its new owner, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Ltd., of China. Talk about a potential culture clash: cautious, understated, safety-minded Swedes, please meet the brash, swinging-for-the-fences world of modern Chinese business.
In truth, this marriage has great potential for both sides. Geely gets a premium brand name that already enjoys high regard not just in Sweden and the United States but also in China, and the burgeoning Chinese automaker also gets access to Volvo’s state-of-the-art engineering, design, and production know-how. For Ford’s part, it gets Volvo off its books as it continues to circle its wagons around its core blue-oval luxury brand, having already spun off Aston Martin, Jaguar, and Land Rover and having recently announced that Mercury will soon disappear.
So, this brings us to the new, 2011 S60, a sedan that certainly seems like a nice dowry for Volvo to bring to its new marriage. And we’ve just driven it in Portugal.
