The Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are perennial bestsellers, but the Hyundai Sonata has asserted itself as the third member of the sales list in the midsize sedan segment for August.
The Sonata was the sixth best-selling midsize sedan in the United States in 2009, trailing the Camry, Accord, Altima, Fusion, and Malibu. In August, Hyundai sold 21,399 Sonatas to eclipse the Altima, Fusion, and Malibu for the month. The 21,399 figure was within striking distance of the Accord’s 22,506 units but still a ways off the Camry’s 30,764. Nevertheless, it’s a significant step for the Korean automaker.
“We haven’t been able to catch the Accord and Camry, but we’ve done very well,” said John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America president and CEO.
The Sonata is Hyundai’s top-selling product in 2010 by a pretty significant margin. With more momentum behind the brand, Hyundai looks to grow its U.S. market share to 4.7 percent this year, up from the three percent it held in 2008.
