The next-generation 2011 Hyundai Elantra will be EPA rated at 29/40 mpg city/highway, according to a Motor Trend report.

The new U.S.-spec Elantra will soon debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show but before it does we now know the compact sedan’s fuel economy will just about match that of the 2012 Ford Focus and surpass most 2011 Chevrolet Cruze trims except the new Cruze Eco with a manual transmission.

Engine options for the now-American-made Elantra are still unknown, but we suspect buyers will have a choice between a 1.6- and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. For comparison to the 2011 Elantra’s 29/40 mpg, the 2010 model is rated 25-26/34-35 mpg city/highway with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.
