2011-2012 Volvo S60 Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has added both the 2011 and 2012 Volvo S60 to its list of Top Safety Picks, making it the fifth model in Volvo’s lineup to do so this year.

Achieving the top mark of “Good” in all three testing categories of roof strength, frontal offset, and side impact tests earned the S60 a place on the Top Pick list. Volvo has also introduced a number safety technologies — such as an automatic braking system — which are available as added safety equipment on the S60.

Other midsize luxury Top Picks include the Audi A4 sedan, Lincoln MKZ, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Volvo has long had a reputation for being one of the safest carmakers and continues to do so for 2011: Volvo’s entire lineup has been rated as 2011 IIHS Top Safety Picks, with the exception of the S40/V50 and the C70.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not tested the 2011 or 2012 S60 yet, but the 2009 model received a frontal crash rating of four out of five stars and a side impact crash rating of five stars.
