Why the Honda Crossroad Hype?
Over the past few weeks, the car blogs have gone wild with postings about a new Japanese market SUV, the Honda Crossroad. It was originally spotted in L.A. back in December during the filming of a promo video for the car, which led to speculation that it may be sold here. It’s not.
The Element earned a spot in Honda’s SUV lineup because it was unique, versatile, and fun. The Crossroad, while capable of holding more passengers, has nothing special about it that would slot it anywhere in the American product line. Its styling is dated and the overall design is better suited for the Japanese market than ours. It isn’t small and cute like the Element, but it isn’t as powerful or as rugged as the Pilot, Honda’s current seven-passenger SUV. And it has no family resemblance to anything Honda sells here. The hype that the Crossroad has been getting is mind-boggling. It isn’t some hot, desirable sports car that we can whine “Oh, boo hoo, why don’t we get that dear thing!” It isn’t something that mainstream Americans would buy, so why talk about it? Why don’t we just cry about how Fiat doesn’t bring us the Multipla or ask why we don’t get the Skoda Octavia. No one cares! Stop talking about the Crossroad, please!
